Outdoor Reentry Project

Transform Lives and Build Stronger Communities

Fresh air. Open skies. A chance to help people reclaim their potential and create better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities.

Outdoor adventures like camping, hiking, and sailing aren’t just fun—they’re life-changing. These experiences give people the tools to build confidence, communication skills, and the foundation for long-term success.

For 18 years, Norway has shown the power of these programs, bringing people from correctional programs, staff, and community volunteers together in a way that transforms lives. Now, the Center for Justice and Human Dignity (CJHD) is bringing this proven idea to the U.S.—starting with a bold 30-day wilderness program in Maine.

Be Part of Something Bigger

CJHD isn’t just creating a program—we’re creating opportunities for people to rebuild their lives, care for their families, and give back to their communities. This is about more than second chances. It’s about giving people the tools and confidence they need to support themselves and those they love.

With support from the Maine Initiatives Foundation, we’re launching a transformative experience in the Lagash Wilderness. This 30-day program will bring together people from correctional settings, correctional staff, and community volunteers to prove one thing: When people are given the right tools and opportunities, they can thrive.

This is the start of something powerful—and you can be part of it.

Improving reentry into community after incarceration

Why This Matters

When people have the chance to learn, grow, and heal, the ripple effects are profound. Programs like this set participants up to:

  • Provide for their families through new skills, confidence, and motivation.
  • Support their communities by becoming positive, contributing members of society.
  • Break the cycle of disconnection and struggle, replacing it with hope and opportunity.

This project helps create real, tangible change that strengthens families and communities.

What This Program Looks Like

Every trip is more than an adventure—it’s a chance to build skills for life:

  • Participants prepare as a team—packing supplies, planning meals, and learning safety and teamwork.
  • Outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and cooking teach cooperation and problem-solving.
  • Campfire conversations and shared experiences build trust, confidence, and connection.
  • Individuals are exposed to careers and opportunities in the great outdoors.

These outings create the foundation for stronger families and healthier communities by giving people the skills to thrive long after the trip is over.

How You Can Help

This is your chance to create change that lasts for generations. Your contribution helps people rebuild their lives and create a brighter future for those they love.

Here’s how your support makes a difference:

  • $25 provides supplies for one participant.
  • $500 sponsors a full day of activities that build critical skills.
  • $10,000 or more helps us expand this program to support more families and communities.

Every dollar you give supports real, lasting change.
